We are CANDY HOUSE

It all began when Jerming Gu, a 26-year-old Taiwanese student at Stanford, was standing in line at the campus Starbucks. He watched in awe as other students swiftly paid with card swipes, feeling embarrassed as he fumbled for change. This moment made him feel outdated and out of place.

The next day, Jerming got a debit card and stopped carrying a wallet. With no bulky wallet, not only did payments become smoother, but his pockets were lighter, making him feel great.

However, he soon realized it wasn't perfect yet. Keys still remained in his pocket. Wanting to eliminate this bulky nuisance, he conceived the idea of turning smartphones into keys. At that time, Silicon Valley was already seeing innovations that could incorporate credit cards into phones.

"Let's consolidate everything into a single smartphone. Then, we'd only need to carry our phone," he thought.

With this idea, Jerming started developing a robot to operate keys via smartphone using a 3D printer he co-owned with a friend. Living in a dorm, he needed a solution that could be easily installed without changing the door lock.

Learning that his wife's friend's husband was a talented Korean computer science engineer from Stanford, Jerming invited him to join the project and develop the software to control the robot.

When their robot first worked, they were thrilled. This device could free people from being bound by physical keys, allowing them to lock and unlock doors with just a smartphone. They had found their "Open Sesame" - the magic words from "Ali Baba and the Forty Thieves"!

Believing that many others would want this too, they named the robot "SESAME" and launched it on the American crowdfunding platform Kickstarter in 2015. The response was overwhelming, surpassing their initial goal and raising 1.4 million dollars in just two months.

Thus, CANDY HOUSE and "SESAME" were born.

This was just our first step. CANDY HOUSE continues to explore simple yet innovative lifestyles filled with surprises and joy. We aim to share the excitement and wonder, like children discovering a candy house, with all of you. This is our goal and our delight.
